(17 mar. 1804, Richmond, Va., EE.UU.–17 jul. 1881, cerca de Kansas City, Mo.).

Explorador en la frontera estadounidense. A partir de 1822 dirigió expediciones de caza de pieles a Utah e Idaho. Fue el primer hombre de raza blanca en visitar el Gran Lago Salado (1824) y de los primeros en explorar la zona del río Yellowstone, en Wyoming. En 1843 instaló un centro de comercio de pieles en Fort Bridger, Wyo., en la senda de Oregón. Después del decenio de 1850 se desempeñó como explorador del gobierno. Ganó fama legendaria por su amplio conocimiento del territorio y de los indios que lo habitaban.
